Day to Forget for Downpatrick as Lurgan win by 6 Wickets
Downpatrick lost a rain affected Ulster Bank League Section 1 match at home to Lurgan this past Saturday (7th May).
The weather forecast for the day predicted heavy rain in the late afternoon. Therefore the likelihood was that the game would be reduced at some stage and the Duckworth Lewis mathematical calculator would come into play. With this in mind, having won the toss, Lurgan put the home side into bat.
The Downpatrick opening batsmen survived a fiery spell from the Lurgan opening bowlers and moved the score steadily along before losing the first wicket in the 12th over with the score on 33 when Dale Mullan was caught off the bowling of Heasley. This brought Muhammad Farrukh, the Downpatrick professional, to the crease. He settled quickly and helped take the score to 65 before Ben McIlroy was given out LBW for a fine 38. Downpatrick captain James Magowan followed quickly, bowled by Heasley for 0 and with the score on 107 James Cunningham was out caught and bowled for 20. Paul Tate (12) and Gavin Ringland (17) both got themselves settled but were unable to push on and when the predicted rain arrived Downpatrick were on 193 for 6 after 45 overs with Justin Rea on 7 not out and Muhammad Farrukh finishing another excellent innings on 79 not out.
After a delay of around one and a half hours the Duckworth Lewis system set Lurgan a total of 204 to win off 38 overs. The Lurgan opening batsmen set about their task and were always up with the required run rate despite Downpatrick taking 2 early wickets to leave Lurgan on 54 for 2. Downpatrick were unable to capture the vital wicket of Lurgan professional Godbole, who went on to finish the game on 84 not out, hitting the winning runs in the 35th over. The wicket takers for Downpatrick, on a difficult day for their bowlers in the damp conditions, were James Magowan with 1 for 34, Dale Mullan 2 for 31 and Muhammad Farrukh with 1 for 37.
This defeat leaves Downpatrick in mid table after two games and with no match this weekend, James Magowan and his young team will be practising hard to ensure that they return to winning ways next week when they entertain Derriaghy at Strangford Road (Saturday 21st May).
