Plenty of Action at the Meadow This Past Week Despite 1st XI Rest Day

Saturday was a “rest” day for Downpatrick Cricket Club 1st XI who have received a bye in the first round of the Ulster Bank Challenge Cup. However, there was still plenty of cricket taking place at Strangford Road.

On Wednesday evening the Under 15’s hosted North Down U15’s in the first round of the Graham Cup. This is a very young U15 side but they gave a very good account of themselves before eventually losing out by 36 runs with the star performance coming from Ricky Gill who scored 43 runs.

On Thursday evening the Downpatrick Midweek team entertained Allstate. This is Downpatrick’s first year in the midweek league and this team will accommodate players who perhaps cannot commit to regular weekend cricket or want to play only an occasional game (please contact the club if you would like to be involved). Allstate batted first and scored 135 in their allotted 20 overs. Downpatrick fell short in their chase by only 3 runs in a nail biting finish. Top scorers for Downpatrick were Jamie Thompson (29), Luca Rea (31) & David Rea (20).

Friday evening saw Downpatrick U13’s in action for the first time this season when they played Saintfield U13’s in a friendly. Both sides rotated their batsmen and bowlers in an attempt to give everyone a chance but Downpatrick looked by far the stronger side winning by 58 runs. The Downpatrick fielding was outstanding and included 5 excellent catches. Top batsmen were Jonny Perry (19) and Jack Montgomery (25) with excellent bowling by Ryan McCoubrey, Steph Rea, Charlie Power & Ewan McCartney.

On Saturday Downpatrick 3rd XI were in action at Strangford Road where they persevered through some sharp rain showers to pick up a 10 run victory against Templepatrick. Best for Downpatrick were Carl Mullan who scored 46 runs, with Mark Graham bowling an excellent spell at a crucial stage in the match to close out the Templepatrick innings.

This week sees the 1st XI back in action, firstly traveling to Stormont on Wednesday evening to take on Civil Service North in the first Twenty/20 cup match of the season. League action returns to the Meadow on Saturday afternoon Derriaghy providing the opposition.

Saturday afternoon sees the 2nd XI travel away to Derriaghy 2nd XI in the Intermediate Cup, with the 3rd XI away to Ballymena in the Minor Cup.

The midweek team play Saintfield at home on Thursday evening.
