On Sunday, a large crowd saw the 1stXI capture the Ulster Shield in an exciting finish against Derriaghy who were playing at their home ground and were full of confidence following two comprehensive league victories against the local side earlier in the season. On Saturday Downpatrick 1st XI also secured an important league victory against local rivals Dundrum and now sit in 4th place in the league trailing 3rd placed Dundrum by only 2 points with a game in hand.

Saturdays league encounter saw Downpatrick bat first and they were quickly in deep trouble and with only 14 runs on the board Ben McIlroy (3),Paul Tate (0) Muhammad Farrukh (8) & Dale Mullan (0) were all back in the pavilion having fallen victim to the Dundrum opening attack of Richard Shilliday and Professional R Kakade.

Downpatrick skipper James Magowan and Michael Carson steadied the ship to take the Downpatrick score through to 43 before Carson was bowled by Joel Maguire for 12 and when he was quickly followed by Jeremy McCready for 2 the home side looked to be in serious bother with 6 wickets down and the total on 55. Gavin Ringland who has been Downpatrick’s saviour in recent weeks joined his captain at the crease and between them they set about staging a remarkable recovery forming a 126 run partnership to take the total through to 181 before Ringland was run out for a fine 41.

At this stage Magowan was well past his half century and was playing an exceptional captains innings and when he was finally dismissed off the bowling of Gavin McNerlin for a magnificent 105 Downpatrick were back on track with the total on 203. The Downpatrick tail enders of Jamie Thompson (6),Daniel Carson  (14no) & Colin Magowan (11no) all chipped in with vital runs to leave the home sides total on 224 after their allotted 50 overs.

In reply Dundrum got off to a fast start despite losing the wicket of opener Rodney Hassard for 4 and were looking well set to chase down the required total when veteran bowler Colin Magowan began his spell but in his second over Magowan captured the prize wicket of Dundrum professional R Kakade having him well caught in the deep by Michael Carson for 58 to leave the visitors on 110 for 3. Magowan’s slow left arm spin continued to bamboozle the Dundrum batsmen and he finished his 10 over spell with the outstanding figures of 6 for 25 as the Dundrum chase faded away leaving them 67 runs short when the last wicket fell.

This was an outstanding day for the Magowan household as Colin with 6 wickets and his son James with 105 runs dominated a fine victory for the home side.

On Sunday Downpatrick travelled to Queensway to face Derriaghy in the Ulster Shield final. Based upon recent encounters and also the fact that the final was being staged at their home ground Derriaghy were strong favourites to lift the shield but Downpatrick, perhaps for the first time this season fulfilled their potential in every department to record an impressive 12 run victory in a rain affected match.

Downpatrick won the toss and chose to bat and lost their first wicket in the 6thover when Ben McIlroy was out caught behind for 2. This brought together Muhammad Farrukh and Paul Tate who formed a fine partnership to take the total to 95 before Farrukh was also caught behind for 40. James Magowan, fresh from his century the previous day, joined Tate and they batted superbly to take the total to 192 before Tate was caught at deep mid on for an outstanding 85. Gavin Ringland joined Magowan and they took the total through to 213 before the Downpatrick captain was caught at short fine leg  for 60 attempting a reverse sweep.

Ringland followed for 11 with the total on 218 and when Jeremy McCready was bowled first ball Dale Mullan and Justin Rea set about trying to boost the Downpatrick total in the remaining overs. They had taken the total to 242 when rain stopped play with 2 overs remaining. The umpires opted to take an early tea but the heavy downpour had taken its toll on the Derriaghy pitch and play was delayed for around an hour and a half as groundstaff battled to save the match from abandonment and the destiny of the shield being decided by a dreaded bowl out.

Both sides were keen to avoid such a scenario and persuaded the umpires to let the game resume. At 5.30 pm the sides returned to the field and due to the time lost Downpatrick were unable to complete their innings and the Derriaghy innings had been reduced to 23 overs with a net run rate target of 147 which looked very achievable for the big hitting Derriaghy batsmen with all 10 wickets available.

But Downpatrick were very focused on the task in hand and knew that their bowling and fielding had to be of the absolutely highest standard and when opening bowler Justin Rea claimed the wicket of Derriaghy’s South African opening batsman Chris Daubney for 2, caught at mid wicket by Gavin Ringland in his first over and followed this up by clean bowling the Derriaghy professional , Pushpalal for 19 in his 3rd over it was game on. James Magowan then had the dangerous A Kenny superbly caught at first slip by Muhammad Farrukh and Derriaghy were in trouble at 36 for 3.

There was another rain interruption and the required total was adjusted again with Derriaghy now needing 133 off 21 overs to win. Downpatrick claimed their next wicket with the score on 44 when excellent fielding by Farrukh had S Heggarty run out for 2. The Downpatrick bowlers were being well supported in the field and they continued to claim regular wickets to keep Derriaghy under pressure but with 2 overs remaining the home team needed 27 runs with their star local batsman Craig Lewis still at the wicket.

Ben McIlroy bowled the penultimate over which conceded only 10 runs leaving a targer of 17 runs of the last over which was to be bowled by Downpatrick professional Muhammad Farrukh. He bowled a superb final over conceding only 2 runs to give Downpatrick victory and their first silverware in over 8 years. Paul Tate picked up the Man of the Match Award for his fine innings of 85.

Downpatricks attention returns to the league this week with a match against Woodvale (date & venue to be confirmed)
